Read the cloth
Immediate softness can be produced by aggressive finishing and does not always predict longevity. Look for density, recovery and a surface that does not shed excessively when handled.
Ply count alone is insufficient. Fibre length, yarn twist, knitting tension and finishing interact. A lighter garment may be excellent, but it should be bought for its intended use rather than treated as indestructible.
Ownership is part of quality
Rotate wears, rest the garment, remove pills gently and wash according to the maker's guidance. Store clean, folded and protected from moths. Repair small damage before it spreads.
Twenty years is possible, not promised. The private luxury lies in learning the object well enough to help it age.
