By invitation. London has grander hotels and newer ones. It has nothing as quietly self-assured as The Connaught, which has spent a century declining to be interesting in public.

A Victorian building on Carlos Place, restored rather than reinvented, with the mahogany staircase intact and a modern wing that the street barely notices. The Connaught's trick is that it feels like a private club without the membership: the public rooms are small, the lighting is low, and nothing is scaled for photography.
The Connaught Bar has been named the world's best bar more than once, and the martini trolley — mixed at the table from a choice of bitters — is the most copied piece of theatre in the industry. It is the one part of the hotel that fills with non-residents; book, or go at six.
Hélène Darroze at The Connaught holds three Michelin stars; Jean-Georges at The Connaught handles a lighter lunch in the bright corner room. The Aman Spa in the basement is small but properly run, with a pool that residents can usually have to themselves in the morning.
Rooms in the older part of the house vary considerably, and some are modest for the rate. The spa is small by international standards. And Mayfair evenings bring traffic to Carlos Place that lower front rooms will hear.
A fourth-floor suite facing Mount Street, above the restaurant noise and with the best of the Mayfair rooftops. The Apartment, with its own entrance from Carlos Place, is the option when nobody should see you arrive.
The benchmark. Dark panelling, no branding, a front desk that greets by name without announcing it, and a clientele that includes people who have stayed for thirty years without ever being photographed there.
Year-round. May to July for the London season; January for the best rates and an empty Mayfair.
