By invitation. Louis XV commissioned the building; Marie-Antoinette took piano lessons in it. The question for a modern guest is whether a palace of that weight can still function as a hotel — and after the 2017 restoration, it can.

Four years and a reported €200 million produced the most thorough palace restoration in modern Paris. Historic rooms — Les Salons des Aigles, the Marie-Antoinette room — were conserved under state supervision, while the guest floors were rebuilt to contemporary standards. The result avoids the pastiche that afflicts most palace renovations.
Larger than the Paris palace average, with unusually good light on the Concorde side. The Karl Lagerfeld suites are the ones photographed; the Grands Appartements are the ones to take. Courtyard rooms are quiet but dark — the trade is real, and in this hotel the square is worth the noise.
A 16-metre marble pool under vaulted stone in the Sense spa, one of the two best hotel pools in Paris. L'Écrin holds a Michelin star; Brasserie d'Aumont is the everyday room and the better breakfast. Les Ambassadeurs bar, in the former ballroom, is the most beautiful drinking room in the city.
Place de la Concorde is a traffic circle, and the address is more impressive than the immediate surroundings. Service can tilt formal to the point of stiffness. And the house is large enough that the intimacy of a Cheval Blanc or a Connaught is not on offer.
The Grands Appartements — two historic apartments with their own lift access, private terraces over the Concorde and eighteenth-century rooms that were restored rather than replicated. The two Karl Lagerfeld-designed suites are the fashionable choice but face the courtyard.
Not quiet — this is French palace luxury, gilt and marble and ceremony. The discretion is in the operation rather than the decoration: separate entrances, a staff trained to be invisible, and a courtyard arrival off rue Boissy d'Anglas.
