The Watch Collection That Is Built, Not Bought
By invitation. A collection begins when the second watch changes the meaning of the first.
A thesis, not an inventory
The number of watches is less important than the relationship between them. A collection might trace one calibre, one maker, one function or the objects attached to personal milestones.
Scarcity alone is a weak organising principle. It can create a valuable inventory without producing a coherent collection.
Time as the curator
Research serviceability, parts policy and provenance before purchase. Keep records. Wear the watches. Let a mistaken acquisition teach the collection what it is not.
The finest private collections often contain restraint: pieces not pursued, trends allowed to pass and one reference held long enough to become biography.
