Patek Philippe — The Most Coveted Watch Brand in the World

By invitation. Geneva since 1839, the Stern family since 1932, and the watchmakers whose names — Calatrava, Nautilus, Aquanaut — set the standard for everyone else.

01

The Manufacture

Geneva · Founded 1839

Antoni Norbert Patek opened a workshop in Geneva in 1839; Jean Adrien Philippe joined six years later and invented the keyless winding system that every modern wristwatch still uses. Patek Philippe is the oldest independent family-owned watch manufacture in Geneva, run by the Stern family since 1932. Its slogan is famous precisely because it is true: you never actually own a Patek Philippe — you merely look after it for the next generation.

02

Calatrava

The definitive dress watch · 1932

Named after the cross of the Knights of Calatrava, the reference 96 distilled the round wristwatch to its purest form: a clean dial, a slim case, nothing to explain. Ninety years later it is still the benchmark every other dress watch is measured against, and the clearest expression of the brand's discipline — never a fashion object, always a form.

03

Nautilus

The steel sports icon · 1976

Gérald Genta sketched the Nautilus in a single evening, inspired by a ship's porthole, and with it invented the luxury steel sports watch. The reference 3700 of 1976 made steel respectable at Patek's price. The steel 5711A became the most coveted watch on the secondary market before its discontinuation in 2021 — and a final Tiffany-signed edition sold at auction for more than six million dollars.

04

Aquanaut

The modern casual icon · 1997

The Aquanaut is the Nautilus's younger sibling: a rounded octagonal case, a dial patterned like a tropical composite strap and a more casual, contemporary attitude. Introduced in 1997, it brought a younger collector to the brand. The 5167A and its chronograph sibling are now nearly as hard to find as the Nautilus itself.

05

Grand Complications

Perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, chimes

Patek Philippe has spent two centuries solving the hardest problems in watchmaking: perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, split-second chronographs and astronomical displays. The Grandmaster Chime, with twenty complications and reversible case, is the most complicated watch the house has ever made. No other brand keeps this many crafts alive under one roof.

06

In-house everything

The Geneva Seal · movements finished by hand

Every movement is designed, made and finished in Geneva, with bridges anglage-polished by hand and dialwork executed by crafts trained inside the company. The Patek Philippe Seal, adopted in 2009, sets its own rules above the industry's Geneva Seal and applies to the finished watch, not just the movement. It is the closest thing watchmaking has to a guaranteed standard.

07

The secondary market

Scarcity beyond intention

Patek Philippe builds a fraction of Rolex's volume, and when a reference is discontinued the supply of a collector favourite ends for good. That is why a retired steel Nautilus can trade above a gold one, and why auction records keep falling to the brand. Prices fluctuate with fashion, but the pattern holds: the waiting list is the door, and the secondary market is the tax on impatience.

08

Independence

The Stern family · four generations

While rivals merged into conglomerates, Patek Philippe stayed family-owned and answers to no quarterly report. Production is deliberately held back, the company invests in its own craftsmanship schools and never licenses its name. Independence is not nostalgia here — it is the mechanism that protects the quality that makes the brand worth wanting.

Frequently asked

Why is Patek Philippe considered the most prestigious watch brand?
Unbroken heritage since 1839, independent family ownership, every movement finished in Geneva by hand, and the highest complication expertise in the industry. The result is scarcity of both craft and product — which is why demand consistently exceeds supply.
Which is better, the Nautilus or the Aquanaut?
The Nautilus is the historic icon with the sharper silhouette; the Aquanaut is the younger, softer, more casual design. Both are integrated-bracelet steel sports watches and both carry long waiting lists — the choice is one of attitude, not quality.
Is Everything.Goes.Luxury affiliated with Patek Philippe?
No. Patek Philippe® is a registered trademark of Patek Philippe SA. Everything.Goes.Luxury is an independent publication and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Patek Philippe SA.
Are Patek Philippe watches a good investment?
Discontinued references have appreciated dramatically, but prices fluctuate and past performance does not guarantee future returns. We treat Patek Philippe as a cultural and engineering subject, not as investment advice.
