01
Born on the mountain
Monestier-de-Clermont · 1952
Moncler takes its name from Monestier-de-Clermont, an Alpine village near Grenoble, where René Ramillon and André Vincent made quilted sleeping bags and tents for workers facing brutal winters. The first down jackets were literally workwear — worn over overalls by factory labourers. That origin matters: every Moncler luxury jacket carries genuine mountain DNA.
02
Proven at altitude
K2 · 1954
Moncler equipped the Italian expedition that achieved the first ascent of K2, the world's most feared mountain, and later French and Alaskan expeditions. When Lionel Terray tested the jackets on glaciers, the brand earned something money cannot buy: expedition credentials. Luxury built on survival equipment has a different weight to luxury built on runway fantasy.
03
The Maya jacket
The definitive luxury down jacket
The Maya — glossy laqué nylon, goose down, the felt rooster-and-M logo on the sleeve — is Moncler's icon the way the 2.55 is Chanel's. Instantly recognisable, endlessly imitated and worn from St. Moritz to Stockholm, it turned a technical garment into a status object. Few single products define an entire category the way the Maya defines luxury outerwear.
04
The Ruffini transformation
From ski slopes to fashion week · 2003
When Remo Ruffini acquired Moncler in 2003, it was a respected but sleepy French-Italian sportswear maker. He removed it from general sports retail, raised prices, tightened distribution and moved the shows to Milan. Within a decade Moncler had become a case study in luxury repositioning — proof that brand discipline creates value faster than any marketing campaign.
05
Moncler Genius
A house of collaborations · 2018
Instead of one creative director, Moncler Genius invites a rotating cast — Pierpaolo Piccioli, Simone Rocha, Craig Green, JW Anderson and more — to reinterpret the down jacket each season. The project treats the puffer as a canvas for haute couture, and it works: Genius collections sell out and keep Moncler at the centre of fashion conversation.
06
The down itself
DIST-certified · traceable
Moncler's down is certified to the house's own DIST protocol — covering traceability, animal welfare and fill quality — with at least 90% down clusters for maximum warmth-to-weight. The jackets are light enough to fold into a pocket yet rated for genuine cold. In luxury, materials are the argument; Moncler's materials are documented.
07
Beyond the jacket
Shoes, skiwear & Stone Island
Moncler has grown from down jackets into a full wardrobe — alpine footwear, Grenoble skiwear with real technical specifications, and knitwear. The group's acquisition of Stone Island added a second cult label to the portfolio. The direction is clear: own the mountain-to-city wardrobe, from summit boots to après-ski.

A Milan stock-exchange luxury story
Listed since 2013
Moncler's IPO was one of the great luxury listings of the decade, and the stock has rewarded the discipline: controlled distribution, full-price sales and steady price increases. The company proved that a single iconic product, managed with restraint, can support a multi-billion-euro valuation — the outerwear equivalent of the Rolex playbook.
